Speaker Spotlight: Dennis Robbins, M.P.H, Ph.D. | 2017 Conference Chair

Dennis Robbins (M.P.H. Harvard, Ph.D., Boston College) is a prominent innovator, thought leader, and health activist. His distinguished career spans multiple sectors of health, wellness, health care, industry, medical and surgical devices and technology, disruptive innovation, ethics and policy.  His initial work on patient-centric engagement and now person-centricity ™ has stimulated a major paradigmatic shift in how we think about health, healthcare, and next generation engagement across diverse ecosystems.

Dr. Robbins was a National Fund for Medical Education Fellow, Visiting Scholar and Research Fellow at Harvard. He has advised Presidential and White house commissions, the military health system, start-ups, two US Supreme Court Cases and chaired the PCMH 2.O national think tank where he created the concept of person-centricity™, to help people become and stay healthier while adding years to their lives and life to their years. He blends elements of health information technologies, ethics, behavioral economics, exercise physiology, sleep, mindfulness, and healthy eating to bend the sickness curve. He serves on the boards or advisory boards of several companies and national organizations including the Global Innovation and Leadership Council of Frost and Sullivan and the American Heart Assn’s Technology and Innovation Advisory Board.

Dr. Robbins was a major force in the early Hospice Movement and worked closely across both aisles and CMS in helping to promote the Hospice Medicare benefit. His legacy of nine books and more than 400 articles is complimented by a plethora keynote presentations and panels. He has been recognized in the national media in such publications as Forbes, Medical Economics, Modern Healthcare, Hospital Ethics, and Managed Healthcare Executive who depicted him as among the top ten keenest thinkers in Managed Care.

Speaker Spotlight: Amanda Goltz

Amanda L. Goltz, MPA is the Vice President of Digital Innovation at BTG, a global medtech firm, managing the portfolio of digital initiatives combining clinical interventions, device technology, and digital services to incorporate the patient experience and improve measurable outcomes.  Previously, Amanda was the Director of Product Strategy and Innovation at Aetna, sourcing emerging solutions from the digital health and innovative networks marketplace, pairing them with employer clients, and directing implementation of the solutions at scale.

Amanda has also managed the Innovation and Consumer Engagement portfolio at Pacific Business Group on Health (PBGH), a coalition of 60 employers who collectively provide self-funded health coverage to over 10M employees and dependents at an annual cost of $12B.  Prior to PBGH, Amanda was senior advisor to the national healthcare practice at Manatt Health Solutions.  From 2005 to 2009, Amanda served as Program Director at Partners Healthcare, the integrated delivery network founded by Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, managing a system-wide quality improvement initiatives.  Amanda advises several start-up companies as a mentor at 500Startups, Rock Health, and StartXMed, health and life sciences incubator for Stanford University.   Amanda received her MPA in Health Finance and Management from New York University and her BA from Columbia College of Columbia University.

Fitbit Addresses Diabetes Management

A recent article in Harvard Business Review details the ways in which digital health care can help prevent chronic diseases like diabetes. One of the most expensive and rampant chronic diseases, treatment for diabetes exacts a staggering cost of $245 billion each year, with an estimated 30.3 million people affected.

A number of digital health interventions can be used to address chronic conditions like diabetes, with the ultimate goals of reducing costs, improving patients’ involvement in their own care, and mitigating the overwhelming burden of chronic diseases in the U.S. Most recently, Fitbit has demonstrated its interest in addressing diabetes management, forming partnerships with medical device giant Medtronic and DexCom.

Fitbit CEO and Chairman James Park states that these collaborations have involved the integration of data streams from connected glucose monitors into Fitbit’s data streams, and then displaying that data on Fitbit’s app. “For a lot of people managing their diabetes, access to that data has traditionally been very difficult so just being able to have that data be able to merge into other data streams and be available in real time is an advancement for people with diabetes.”

He is a graduate from Columbia University, and has worked at several other startups in the past, including Relationship Science, Global Thermostat, and Uber. His research has been featured several times in the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, New York Times, and Reuters.

Osso VR wins US DOE EdSim Challenge

The U.S. Department of Education announced Osso VR as the winner in the EdSim Challenge, which called for virtual reality, video game developer, and educational technology communities to submit concepts for immersive simulations that will prepare students for a globally competitive workforce and spur an ecosystem of virtual and augmented reality technology in education.

Five finalists were selected out of 249 submissions. Each finalist received $50,000 in cash as well as in-kind prizes from Oculus and Samsung, and refined their submissions during the Virtual Accelerator phase. Finalists presented playable prototypes to the judges at Demo Day on September 18, 2017, where a live audience joined the Challenge judges at the Department Of Education to see the five finalists compete for the $430,000 grand prize.  The winner was recommended by a panel of judges with expertise in education, gaming, workforce development, emerging technology, and venture capital.

Osso VR is a hands-on surgical training platform that enables users to practice cutting-edge techniques through realistic, hands-on simulations, bridging the gap between career exploration and career preparation. They won $430,000 in cash and additional in-kind prizes from IBM and Microsoft.

Wearables Potential Impact on the Top 10 Causes of Death

In 2012, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) indicated about half of all adults (117 million people at the time) had one or more chronic health conditions. By 2014, seven of the top 10 causes of death were chronic diseases, with heart disease and cancer accounting for nearly 46% of all deaths each year. The costliest (86% of the nation’s $2.7 trillion annual health care expenditures) chronic health problems like heart disease, stroke, cancer, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and arthritis, are among the most prevalent, and continue to be on the rise. Considering lack of exercise or physical activity, poor nutrition, tobacco use, and excessive alcohol consumption is linked to most of these diseases – they also are the most preventable and reversible. However, compliance in lifestyle change, monitoring and medication management of chronic disease has proven to be a great challenge for clinicians and patients alike. Thanks to innovations and advancements in technology, this is becoming more accessible and convenient for both patient and clinician.

One innovator now offers a solution that supports patient follow up, development of treatments and the ongoing need for study into these conditions, the Byteflies Exploration Kit and data platform. Byteflies, a Belgian-American wearable health start-up, has introduced high precision wearable sensors and a data platform that remotely tracks patient vital signs, from blood flow (PPG) to electro-dermal activity (EDA), electrocardiogram (ECG), motion, respiration, and electromyogram (EMG). The platform is based on insights gained through practical use cases and decades of experience in healthcare and technology applications, and uses extend beyond heart rate measurement.

“When it comes to monitoring health, wearables have incredible potential. However, a wristband that counts steps and measures heart rate just won’t cut it when you’re developing solutions for Parkinson’s disease, pulmonary and cardiovascular conditions, hypertension, or epilepsy,” explains Hans Danneels, CEO and co-founder of Byteflies. “You need to be able to measure raw, accurate data – the kind of data collected in hospitals.”  Their technology is currently used by universities and pharmaceutical companies for detection of epileptic seizures, blood pressure trends, balance, and fatigue.

Advancements and innovations in wearable devices like Byteflies wearable monitors and data platform, smart clothing and footwear to monitor activity and vitals, apps for patient reporting and communication, smart contact lenses monitoring glucose levels, and ingestibles to monitor medicine levels and conditions such as glucose level in diabetics, will help the industry take a much-needed turn to better management, monitoring and prevention. Convenience and ease-of-use for patients has shown promise with increased compliance, allowing physicians to take a more proactive approach in monitoring and treatment.  While wearables won’t solve the chronic disease concerns, and not all patients will understand or be willing to comply, it signals the beginning of a shift and not just a trend.  Availability is increasing, costs are declining and medtech for both physicians and patients is more widely accessible – all a progress in helping clinicians offer more effective care for their patients.

FDA Encourages Development of Medical Technology

The Food and Drug Administration has recently announced a program that actively encourages the development of medical digital technology, including wireless wearables and applications that can monitor blood pressure and heart rate, track intake of calories, and measure physical activity.

The program is designed to give pre-clearance to developers working on digital health products, as the approval process for apps sometimes includes burdensome regulations, which can increase costs and limit innovation: the FDA hopes to reduce development costs and give entrepreneurs increased opportunities to develop products.

Investing in Digital Health

Several of the world’s largest and most successful companies are investing in digital health, including Amazon, Google, and Microsoft. Amazon is heavily investing in health, across a number of different areas, and Google is likewise “ramping up its health cloud business.” Apple and Nokia recently announced a partnership on digital health, designed to advance medical support.

Amazon has also recently landed a health-tech hire from the company Box, a cloud content management and file sharing service for businesses. Missy Krasner, who previously helped build the cloud storage company’s health product, will transition to Amazon. Krasner was also a founding member of Google Health, the company’s online medical records and wellness platform.

Announcement of NHS Funding

An announcement from the government has recently stated that the National Health Service–the publicly funded national healthcare system for England, and the largest, oldest single-payer healthcare system in the world–will receive £86 million worth of funding over the next three years.

This effort is designed to spur innovation, and help firms further develop medical advancements and technology. The release states that businesses will have the opportunity to ‘bid for funding’ in order to aid developments, which could potentially run the gamut from digital technologies to new inventive medications.
